The Bangladesh case study is the oldest case study I use. I use it because it illustrates the aweful impacts of tropical cyclones and their associated tidal surges. The country of Bangladesh illustrates many of the coastal topographical charactersitics that can influence the severity of coastal flooding.
7/6/2014 · Like most engineering schemes in geography, there’s hard and soft coastal engineering. As usual, hard engineering techniques are high technology, high cost, human made solutions. They do little to work with nature and sustainability is a key issue with them, despite their initial signs of success.
During the lecture, typical coastal engineering structures, such as groins, breakwaters, and jetties, are introduced. The case study is introduced with a brief overview of North Carolina's coastal management laws, Figure Eight Island's geography, and the current controversy over whether to build a terminal groin.

Coastal Engineering Co. was key to the successful completion of a $25-million project to massively reorganize pathways and parking and add guest rooms, a wastewater treatment facility, a second pool and a children’s center, and also redo the resort’s waterfront landscaping and terracing. John and his team work as true partners of the resort.

8/30/2016 · According to a comprehensive global research study from 2007, 634 million people—about one-tenth of the world’s population—live in low-lying coastal areas and are at risk of ocean-change impacts. Civil engineers and coastal engineering will play a major part to help low-lying cities survive.
Pevensey Bay: a case study of soft engineering The shingle bank • The shingle bank is key to the coastal defence strategy. • Its base lies below present-day sea level. Without the bank 50 km² of land, 10,000 properties, several caravan parks and key road and rail links would be at risk of sea flooding.

Coastal engineering is a branch of civil engineering concerned with the specific demands posed by constructing at or near the coast, as well as the development of the coast itself.. The hydrodynamic impact of especially waves, tides, storm surges and tsunamis and (often) the harsh environment of salt seawater are typical challenges for the coastal engineer – as are the morphodynamic changes ...
